What is the cost to the client?
Brain Map

Client fees vary, depending on qualifications of the provider, the market, etc.   There’s usually an initial clinical intake.  The type and cost will vary based on the expertise and credentials of the provider.  Some may use extensive testing; some may use a more clinical symptom approach.  If a quantitative EEG (EEG based brain map) is added to the intake, it can increase the cost of the testing.  Costs of the qEEG vary by the level of expertise in interpretation, the type of provider, the equipment used, and other factors.

Session costs typically are similar to the per-session cost that a professional charges for other services. Some practitioners offer a discount if multiple sessions are pre-paid, since it reduces paperwork and collection time for the practitioner, and encourages the client to come consistently.  Some clinicians may use technicians to run sessions and charge less.  Some charge less if they run more than one person in session at a time.

Costs do matter.  There are many clients who cannot afford $100 per hour for 40 sessions.  Some clinicians will charge less.  Others will charge more.  But if insurance doesn't cover it, Neurofeedback may be out of reach for some patients.  However, as word of mouth spreads and people come to see how well neurofeedback can work, many individuals find ways to pay for for it, particularly for their children.

When you consider the amount of money that is spent on straightening teeth - wouldn't it be even more important to straighten out a brain? The effects of neurofeedback often last a long time.  For a struggling child or adolescent, the cost of dealing with the problems can far exceed the investment in neurofeedback. Many parents and clients come to understand this. Insurance is cutting back on coverage across the board, not just for neurofeedback. Patients want something that work - and that's why increasing numbers have sought out neurofeedback.

That being said - a difficult case can take far more than 40 sessions (some therapists offer a discount after 40 sessions).  Good professional training and mentoring is important to achieve consistent success.

There is often interest in ways to cut down the price of training. Some offices send people home with units to do some of the sessions themselves under supervision.  This is called home training. It may be useful for some clients, but it should be done with great caution.

We recommend clinicians not use a technician or send clients home with equipment until they have solid experience in neurofeedback.
